About Bonaire

Bonaire was established in Adelaide in 1954 and has spent more than seventy years as one of Australia's better-known heating and cooling brands, with a product history spanning three generations of Australian households. Its evaporative cooling and ducted gas heating equipment is manufactured locally at a facility in Salisbury, in Adelaide's northern suburbs — a genuinely local South Australian manufacturing footprint that few national HVAC brands can claim.

Ownership has consolidated over the past few decades: Bonaire became part of Climate Technologies Pty Ltd, the business founded by Ted Celi in 1972 (also owner of the Celair brand), and in 2018 Climate Technologies was acquired by India's Symphony Limited, a major global evaporative cooling manufacturer operating in around 60 countries. Voltas installs and services Bonaire systems as part of our regular multi-brand work across Adelaide — we are not an authorised Bonaire dealer.

Bonaire: Background & Adelaide-Relevant Range

Bonaire's history is genuinely tied to South Australia in a way that's unusual among the brands we work with — the company was founded in Adelaide and continues to manufacture at its Salisbury facility, and its product range has long been shaped by the state's hot, dry summers, which is precisely the climate evaporative cooling performs best in.

The current Bonaire range spans ducted and portable evaporative cooling (plus larger commercial evaporative units), ducted gas heating across multiple star-rating tiers, ducted electric reverse-cycle systems, wall-mounted split air conditioners, and a range of portable and panel electric heaters. This breadth means Bonaire is one of the few brands genuinely competing across evaporative cooling, gas heating and refrigerant-based cooling at once, rather than specialising in just one category.

Since Symphony Limited's 2018 acquisition of Climate Technologies, Bonaire has continued operating as a distinct Australian brand with local manufacturing intact, while gaining access to Symphony's global evaporative cooling engineering and manufacturing scale. For Adelaide homeowners, Bonaire is most commonly considered either for ducted evaporative cooling (a lower-running-cost option well suited to our dry climate) or as an alternative to gas ducted heating brands like Brivis.

Which Bonaire System Is Right for Your Property?

Bonaire's Adelaide-relevant range spans evaporative cooling, ducted gas heating and refrigerant-based reverse-cycle systems — genuinely broader than most single-category HVAC brands we install.

Ducted Evaporative Cooling

Whole-home ducted evaporative systems using continuously circulated fresh, cooled outside air — a lower running-cost alternative to refrigerated cooling that performs particularly well in Adelaide's hot, dry summers.

Ducted Gas Heating

Multiple efficiency tiers (commonly marketed around 4-star and 5-star ratings), a longstanding core Bonaire category and a direct alternative to brands like Brivis.

Ducted & Split Reverse-Cycle Air Conditioning

Refrigerant-based ducted and wall-split reverse-cycle systems for households wanting humidity-independent cooling alongside or instead of evaporative cooling.

Portable Evaporative Coolers

Standalone portable and window-mount evaporative units for smaller spaces or supplementary cooling.

Electric Heating

A range of panel heaters, oil column heaters and electric fireplaces as smaller-scale heating alternatives to ducted gas.

Bonaire's ducted evaporative cooling is a strong fit for larger Adelaide homes wanting continuous fresh-air cooling at a lower running cost than refrigerated systems, particularly where humidity is rarely an issue — which describes most Adelaide summers. Its ducted gas heating is a mainstream, well-proven option for winter heating, especially in a combined system alongside evaporative cooling. Where you specifically need humidity-independent, precise refrigerated cooling (a still, humid night, for example), Bonaire's reverse-cycle range or an alternative refrigerant-based brand may suit better — we're happy to talk through the trade-offs for your property.

Bonaire vs Other Brands — Which Is Better, and Why

Bonaire and Breezair (Seeley International) are both long-established, Adelaide-linked evaporative cooling brands, while Brivis is Bonaire's closest direct competitor in ducted gas heating — here's how they're commonly compared.

Breezair

Both Bonaire and Breezair are Australian-made evaporative cooling brands with genuine South Australian manufacturing roots. Breezair (Seeley International) is positioned more singularly around evaporative cooling engineering and carries a stronger structural warranty on that specific category, while Bonaire's broader range also covers ducted gas heating and reverse-cycle options under one brand.

Brivis

Bonaire and Brivis compete directly in ducted gas heating, both offering multiple efficiency tiers and combined heating/cooling options. Brivis is now backed by Rinnai's gas appliance manufacturing scale and locally builds heaters in Braeside, Victoria, while Bonaire's heating and evaporative range is manufactured in Salisbury, Adelaide — a point of genuine local relevance for South Australian buyers.

These are general, independently-sourced market positions, not a single definitive verdict — the right brand for your property depends on your budget, room layout, noise sensitivity, and whether you need a split system or ducted comfort. A Voltas property audit (below) gives you a specific recommendation rather than a generic one.

Bonaire Repairs, Servicing & Signs Your System Needs Attention

Bonaire's product breadth means service needs vary by system type — here's what we see most often across its evaporative cooling, gas heating and reverse-cycle ranges.

  • Evaporative cooling pad wear and mineral build-up cooling pads and the water distribution system need periodic cleaning or replacement, particularly with Adelaide's mains water hardness — neglected pads are the most common cause of reduced evaporative cooling performance.
  • Ducted gas heater ignition and burner faults as with any gas ducted heating brand, ignition sequence faults, burner issues and thermocouple/sensor faults are common call-outs, particularly on older units approaching or past a decade of service.
  • Ducted system airflow/zone damper issues reduced airflow to specific rooms is often a damper or ducting issue rather than a fault with the main unit itself, applicable to both the evaporative and gas heating ranges.
  • Reverse-cycle refrigerant leaks on Bonaire's refrigerant-based split and ducted reverse-cycle models, the same general refrigerant leak and gas pressure issues apply as with any R32 system.
  • Annual pre-season servicing gaps because evaporative cooling and gas heating both have distinct seasonal duty cycles, we frequently find systems that haven't been serviced ahead of the season they're about to be needed for — a pre-summer evaporative check and pre-winter gas heater check are both worth scheduling.

Service time varies by system: a ducted evaporative cooler service (pad inspection, pump/motor check, water system flush, ducting and damper check) typically takes 60–90 minutes, while a ducted gas heater service (burner, ignition, heat exchanger and safety checks) usually takes a similar 60–90 minutes. We recommend an annual service for each system ahead of its relevant season — spring for evaporative cooling, autumn for gas heating.

Brand choice is only half the decision — sizing, placement, and ductwork design usually matter more to your actual comfort and running costs than the badge on the unit.

1. On-Site Assessment

We measure room sizes, window orientation, insulation, ceiling access, and existing electrical capacity — the real inputs that determine what capacity and system type will actually perform well.

2. Load & Capacity Calculation

Rather than guessing a kW figure, we calculate the cooling/heating load your specific rooms need, so you're not paying for an oversized system or stuck with an undersized one that runs constantly.

3. Brand & Model Shortlist

Based on your budget, noise tolerance, property type, and whether Bonaire or another brand genuinely suits the job better, we shortlist two or three realistic options — with honest trade-offs explained.

4. Fixed, Itemised Quote

You get a clear price for supply and installation before anything is booked in — no surprise costs, no pressure to commit on the spot.

Bonaire Warranty, Standards & What to Check Before You Buy

What Bonaire's own Australian documentation and dealer network state, so you can weigh it up before buying — noting that Bonaire's warranty terms vary by product category more than most single-category brands.

Warranty

Bonaire offers a two-year extended warranty option on eligible products — specifically its Integra II evaporative coolers and 4-star and 5-star ducted gas heaters — provided the extension is applied for within 6 months of installation and the unit has been installed and serviced by a Bonaire-authorised technician. Because Bonaire's range spans evaporative cooling, gas heating and refrigerant-based reverse-cycle systems, base warranty terms differ by product line and model, and we weren't able to confirm a single uniform base warranty period across the entire range from published sources. We'd recommend confirming the exact base warranty term and eligibility for the extended warranty directly with Bonaire or your supplying dealer at time of purchase.

Refrigerant

Bonaire's evaporative cooling and ducted gas heating systems don't use refrigerant gas at all — evaporative cooling works by passing air through water-saturated pads, and gas heating burns natural or LPG gas, so neither is affected by refrigerant regulation or Australia's HFC phase-down. This is a genuine point of difference and one reason evaporative cooling tends to have a lower running cost than refrigerated systems in Adelaide's dry climate. Where Bonaire's range does use refrigerant — its ducted and wall-split reverse-cycle air conditioning options — current models use R32, consistent with the rest of the Australian market and subject to the same DCCEEW-administered HFC import phase-down (running through to 2036) that applies to bulk refrigerant gas imports rather than pre-charged equipment.

Australian Standards

Every installation must comply with AS/NZS 3000 (the Wiring Rules) and is completed by our A-Class electricians and licensed HVAC technicians. Energy performance is labelled under the Australian Government's GEMS Zoned Energy Rating scheme — check the specific model's current label for its star rating in your climate zone before buying.

Quick Answers About Bonaire Air Conditioners

Straight answers to the questions Adelaide customers ask us most about this brand.

Is Voltas an authorised Bonaire dealer?

No — we install and service Bonaire systems as a licensed independent electrical and air conditioning contractor, not as an authorised Bonaire dealer or partner.

Is Bonaire an evaporative cooling brand or an air conditioning brand?

Both — Bonaire's range spans ducted and portable evaporative cooling, ducted gas heating, and refrigerant-based reverse-cycle air conditioning, all under one brand.

What warranty does Bonaire offer in Australia?

Bonaire offers a two-year extended warranty on eligible Integra II evaporative coolers and 4/5-star ducted gas heaters when registered within 6 months of an authorised installation; base warranty terms vary by product line, so confirm specifics with your supplier.

Is Bonaire evaporative cooling a good fit for Adelaide?

Generally yes — evaporative cooling performs well in Adelaide's hot, dry summer climate and typically costs less to run than refrigerated cooling, though it's less effective on genuinely humid days.

Is Bonaire actually made in Adelaide?

Bonaire's evaporative cooling and gas heating products are manufactured at a facility in Salisbury, in Adelaide's northern suburbs, giving it a genuine local South Australian manufacturing footprint.

Can Voltas service both the evaporative and gas heating side of my Bonaire system?

Yes — our team services Bonaire's evaporative cooling, ducted gas heating and reverse-cycle ranges, and can assess a combined system covering both heating and cooling in one visit.

More Bonaire Questions, Answered

How much does a Bonaire ducted evaporative cooling installation cost in Adelaide?

Cost depends on your home's size, ducting layout, roof access and the specific Bonaire model chosen. Evaporative systems are generally less expensive to install than an equivalent-capacity refrigerated ducted system, though running costs and comfort trade-offs differ — we'll walk you through both during a quote.

What's the difference between Bonaire evaporative cooling and a Bonaire reverse-cycle system?

Evaporative cooling passes outside air through water-saturated pads to cool it before circulating it through the home, using significantly less electricity but relying on dry conditions to work well. Reverse-cycle systems use a refrigerant compressor cycle to both heat and cool independent of humidity, at a higher running cost. Bonaire offers both, and we can help you weigh which suits your household.

How often should Bonaire evaporative cooling pads be replaced?

This depends on water hardness, usage hours and local air quality, but as a general guide, pads are commonly inspected annually and replaced every few seasons once cooling performance noticeably drops or the pads show mineral scaling and deterioration. We'll assess pad condition as part of a standard service.

Can I add reverse-cycle cooling to an existing Bonaire ducted gas heater?

In many cases yes, similar to Brivis's DualComfort concept — adding refrigerated cooling to an existing gas heating ductwork setup is a common upgrade path, though it depends on your existing ducting capacity and system compatibility, which we'd assess on-site.

Does Voltas stock spare parts for Bonaire systems?

We source parts through standard wholesale trade channels rather than directly through Bonaire/Climate Technologies, and lead times can vary by component and model age — we'll always give you a realistic timeframe before starting any repair.

Can I get my Bonaire system serviced even though Voltas isn't an authorised dealer?

Yes for general servicing and repair — note that Bonaire's own extended warranty terms specifically require authorised-dealer installation and servicing to remain valid, so if you're relying on that extended warranty, warranty-affecting work may need to go through a Bonaire-authorised technician. We'll always be upfront about this distinction before starting work.
