About Brivis
Brivis has supplied ducted gas heating to Australian homes for more than 50 years, and is credited as an early pioneer of the category — including bringing the first 5-star ducted gas heater to the local market. For much of that history it operated under GWA Group, an Australian building products company, before GWA identified the business as a non-core asset and sold it in a deal announced in December 2014 and completed in early 2015.
The buyer was Rinnai Australia Pty Ltd, for a reported $49 million on a debt and cash-free basis. Rinnai Australia is a wholly owned subsidiary of Rinnai Corporation, a major gas appliance manufacturer headquartered in Nagoya, Japan and listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Since the acquisition, Brivis products have continued to be manufactured locally at a facility in Braeside, Victoria, employing more than 200 people. Voltas installs and services Brivis systems as part of our regular multi-brand work across Adelaide — we are not an authorised Brivis dealer.
Brivis: Background & Adelaide-Relevant Range
Brivis's positioning has remained fairly consistent through its ownership changes: it's a specialist in ducted gas heating, with an evaporative cooling range and a growing reverse-cycle cooling offering rounding out a full whole-home climate control line-up. Its acquisition by Rinnai — itself one of the world's larger gas appliance manufacturers — has reinforced rather than diluted that gas heating specialism, while giving the brand access to a large, financially stable parent company's manufacturing and R&D resources.
The current Brivis range centres on ducted gas heating (in multiple efficiency tiers), ducted evaporative cooling, and ducted reverse-cycle refrigerated cooling. Its DualComfort system combines gas ducted heating with refrigerated reverse-cycle cooling under a single controller with independent zone temperature settings — a genuinely useful combined system for South Australian homes that want efficient gas heating through winter and humidity-independent refrigerated cooling through summer, without running two completely separate ducted systems.
Because Brivis's core strength and longest track record is in gas ducted heating specifically, it tends to be considered by Adelaide homeowners either as a straightforward gas heating replacement, or as part of a combined heating-and-cooling ducted system where gas heating efficiency in Adelaide's cooler winter nights is the main driver.

Brivis's Adelaide-relevant range centres on ducted gas heating, with evaporative and refrigerant-based reverse-cycle cooling available as complementary or combined options.
Ducted Gas Heating
Multiple efficiency tiers of ducted gas heaters, Brivis's core and longest-established product category, historically including some of the first 5-star rated models sold in Australia.
Ducted Reverse-Cycle Refrigerated Cooling
Refrigerant-based ducted cooling for humidity-independent comfort through summer, sized specifically for the added cooling load compared to the equivalent gas heating side.
DualComfort System
A combined gas ducted heating and refrigerated reverse-cycle cooling system managed through a single controller with independent zone settings — well suited to homes wanting efficient winter gas heating alongside summer refrigerated cooling.
Ducted Evaporative Cooling
A lower-running-cost cooling alternative for homes prioritising running costs over humidity-independent performance.
Brivis's ducted gas heating is a strong option for Adelaide homes prioritising efficient, cost-effective winter heating, particularly where gas is already connected. Its DualComfort combined system suits households wanting the best of both worlds — efficient gas heating in winter and humidity-independent refrigerated cooling in summer — from one zoned ducted system, and can often be staged (gas heating installed first, refrigerated cooling added later) if budget requires it. Where evaporative cooling's lower running cost matters more than humidity-independence, its evaporative range is also worth considering; we'll help you weigh these options against your household's heating and cooling priorities.
Brivis vs Other Brands — Which Is Better, and Why
Brivis and Bonaire are the two main brands we install for ducted gas heating in Adelaide, while Daikin represents the fully refrigerant-based ducted alternative many customers compare it against — here's how they're commonly positioned.
Bonaire
Brivis and Bonaire are Australia's two most established names in ducted gas heating, both offering multiple efficiency tiers and combined heating/cooling configurations. Brivis is backed by Rinnai's global gas appliance manufacturing scale and builds locally in Braeside, Victoria, while Bonaire's range is manufactured in Salisbury, Adelaide — a point of local relevance for South Australian buyers, alongside Bonaire's additional evaporative cooling specialism.
Daikin
Brivis's gas-plus-reverse-cycle DualComfort approach and Daikin's fully refrigerant-based ducted systems represent two different philosophies for whole-home heating and cooling. Gas heating tends to be highly efficient and cost-effective through Adelaide's cooler winter nights, while an all-electric Daikin ducted system offers a single-fuel-type solution that may suit homes without gas connected or prioritising electrification.
These are general, independently-sourced market positions, not a single definitive verdict — the right brand for your property depends on your budget, room layout, noise sensitivity, and whether you need a split system or ducted comfort. A Voltas property audit (below) gives you a specific recommendation rather than a generic one.

Ducted gas heating maintenance knowledge applies to Brivis systems just as it does to any gas ducted brand — here's what we see most often, plus notes specific to Brivis's DualComfort combined systems.
- Ignition and burner faults pilot/ignition sequence faults and burner issues are the most common gas ducted heating call-out across every brand, particularly on units approaching or past a decade of service.
- Thermocouple and flame sensor faults a common cause of a heater failing to stay alight or shutting down shortly after starting, generally straightforward to diagnose and replace.
- Ducted airflow and zone damper issues uneven heating or cooling between rooms is often a ducting or damper issue rather than a fault with the main unit, relevant to both the gas heating and DualComfort reverse-cycle side.
- Reverse-cycle refrigerant leaks (DualComfort systems) on the refrigerant-based cooling side of a DualComfort system, standard R32 leak and gas pressure diagnostics apply, same as any reverse-cycle system.
- Missed servicing milestones affecting extended warranty Brivis's extended 9-year warranty on eligible gas ducted heaters requires factory-trained servicing at years 4, 6 and 8 — missing these can affect eligibility even where the unit is otherwise performing well, so we recommend tracking service dates carefully.
A standard Brivis ducted gas heater service (burner, ignition, heat exchanger, thermocouple and safety checks) typically takes 45–75 minutes, while a DualComfort reverse-cycle cooling check adds a further 30–45 minutes for the refrigerant-based side. We recommend an annual gas heater service each autumn ahead of the heating season, alongside a pre-summer check for the cooling side where fitted.

Brand choice is only half the decision — sizing, placement, and ductwork design usually matter more to your actual comfort and running costs than the badge on the unit.
1. On-Site Assessment
We measure room sizes, window orientation, insulation, ceiling access, and existing electrical capacity — the real inputs that determine what capacity and system type will actually perform well.
2. Load & Capacity Calculation
Rather than guessing a kW figure, we calculate the cooling/heating load your specific rooms need, so you're not paying for an oversized system or stuck with an undersized one that runs constantly.
3. Brand & Model Shortlist
Based on your budget, noise tolerance, property type, and whether Brivis or another brand genuinely suits the job better, we shortlist two or three realistic options — with honest trade-offs explained.
4. Fixed, Itemised Quote
You get a clear price for supply and installation before anything is booked in — no surprise costs, no pressure to commit on the spot.

Book Your Free Property AuditBrivis Warranty, Standards & What to Check Before You Buy
What Brivis's own published warranty terms state, so you can weigh it up before buying — note these are documented in most detail for the gas ducted heating range specifically.
Warranty
Brivis's standard published warranty on ducted gas heaters is 5 years parts and labour, alongside a separate 10-year warranty specifically on the gas burner, heat exchanger and structural components. Through Brivis's Service Advantage program, the standard 5-year term can be extended to a total of 9 years parts and labour on eligible models, provided the owner registers the product within the first year of purchase and completes factory-trained servicing at year 4 (adding 2 years), year 6 (adding a further year) and year 8 (adding a final year) — with proof of service required at each stage. Some models, including the Compact Classic (CC3) range, are excluded from the 9-year Service Advantage program. We weren't able to confirm identical published warranty terms for the reverse-cycle cooling side of a DualComfort system, so we'd recommend confirming cooling-specific warranty terms with Brivis or your supplier at time of purchase.
Refrigerant
Brivis's core ducted gas heating range doesn't use refrigerant at all — it heats by burning natural gas or LPG, so it sits outside the refrigerant conversation entirely and isn't affected by Australia's HFC import phase-down. Where Brivis's range does use refrigerant — its ducted reverse-cycle cooling and DualComfort combined systems — current models use R32, consistent with the rest of the Australian ducted and split system market. R32 has a materially lower global warming potential than the R410A it replaced, and its ongoing supply is subject to the DCCEEW-administered HFC import phase-down (running through to 2036), which governs bulk refrigerant gas imports rather than pre-charged equipment already installed in your home.
Australian Standards
Every installation must comply with AS/NZS 3000 (the Wiring Rules) and is completed by our A-Class electricians and licensed HVAC technicians. Energy performance is labelled under the Australian Government's GEMS Zoned Energy Rating scheme — check the specific model's current label for its star rating in your climate zone before buying.

Straight answers to the questions Adelaide customers ask us most about this brand.
Is Voltas an authorised Brivis dealer?
No — we install and service Brivis systems as a licensed independent electrical and air conditioning contractor, not as an authorised Brivis or Rinnai dealer or partner.
What is Brivis's DualComfort system?
DualComfort combines ducted gas heating with refrigerated reverse-cycle cooling under a single controller, with independent zone temperature settings for different areas of the home.
What warranty does Brivis offer on its gas ducted heaters?
Brivis's standard warranty is 5 years parts and labour, extendable to 9 years total through the Service Advantage program if you register the product and complete factory-trained servicing at years 4, 6 and 8.
Is Brivis a good option if I don't have gas connected?
Brivis's core strength is ducted gas heating, so it's most relevant where gas is already connected or you're planning a new connection; for all-electric homes, a fully refrigerant-based ducted brand may be a more straightforward fit.
How long does a Brivis gas heater service take?
A standard service typically takes 45 to 75 minutes, with an additional 30 to 45 minutes if your system includes DualComfort reverse-cycle cooling.
Can Voltas repair a Brivis heater installed by another company?
Yes — we regularly service and repair Brivis systems regardless of who installed them, and will give you an honest assessment of the existing system as part of any repair visit.
More Brivis Questions, Answered
Cost depends on your home's size, ducting layout, gas connection status, and the specific model and efficiency tier chosen. Adding DualComfort reverse-cycle cooling to a gas heating system increases cost further, since the refrigerated side needs greater capacity than the gas heating side alone. We provide a fixed, itemised quote after a short on-site or phone assessment.
Based on Brivis's published terms, you need to register the product within the first year of purchase, then complete factory-trained servicing at year 4 (extending cover to 7 years total), year 6 (extending to 8 years), and year 8 (extending to 9 years), retaining proof of service throughout. Some models, such as the Compact Classic (CC3) range, are excluded from this program.
In many cases yes — Brivis's own guidance notes that gas heating can be installed first with refrigerated cooling added later, provided the ducting and electrical capacity can accommodate the added cooling load, which is generally somewhat greater than the equivalent gas heating requirement. We'd assess this on-site before quoting.
Both are well-established, reputable Australian gas ducted heating brands with broadly comparable efficiency tiers and combined heating/cooling options. The choice often comes down to specific model features, warranty terms at the time of purchase, and, for some South Australian buyers, Bonaire's local Adelaide manufacturing versus Brivis's Rinnai-backed national support network. We're happy to compare both honestly for your specific property.
We source parts through standard wholesale trade channels rather than directly through Brivis/Rinnai, and lead times can vary by component and model age — we'll always give you a realistic timeframe before starting any repair.
Yes for general servicing and repair — note that Brivis's own Service Advantage extended warranty specifically requires factory-trained servicing at set intervals to remain valid, so if you're relying on that extended warranty, warranty-affecting milestone services may need to go through a Brivis-authorised technician. We'll always flag this distinction before starting work.
