About Rinnai

Rinnai Corporation was founded in Nagoya, Japan in 1920 by Kanekichi Hayashi and Hidejiro Naito, and grew into Japan's largest manufacturer of gas kitchen appliances, with a global footprint today spanning more than 20 overseas subsidiaries and manufacturing facilities across Asia, North and South America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Rinnai is best known internationally for gas hot water and heating technology, alongside a growing air conditioning range.

Rinnai Australia is a long-established local subsidiary of Rinnai Corporation with a history spanning more than five decades in this market, operating local manufacturing facilities and a national sales, distribution and service network. The Australian business also manages other well-known local brands including Brivis, and runs its own 1stCare Service accredited technician network. Voltas installs and services Rinnai systems as part of our regular multi-brand work across Adelaide — we are not an authorised Rinnai dealer.

Rinnai Air Conditioners: Background & Adelaide-Relevant Range

While Rinnai is historically best known for gas hot water systems and gas heating, the company has built out a substantial reverse cycle air conditioning range in Australia over recent years, spanning wall-mounted splits, multi-split systems, and ducted reverse cycle inverter systems from small residential capacities up to larger 20–24kW units suited to bigger homes or light-commercial applications.

Rinnai's long local manufacturing and distribution history in Australia, combined with its existing trade relationships from the gas heating and hot water side of the business, gives the brand a well-established local support network relative to some newer entrants to the air conditioning category. In April 2025, Rinnai introduced a new, extended 7-year warranty across a wide selection of its air conditioning systems in Australia, reflecting continued investment in the category.

The current Adelaide-relevant range spans PB, J, T and CJ-series wall splits (2.5–8.0kW), floor console units, multi-split outdoor units with compatible indoor heads, and ducted reverse cycle inverter systems from 7.0kW through to 24.0kW — giving Rinnai coverage across single-room, multi-room and whole-home ducted applications.

Which Rinnai System Is Right for Your Property?

Rinnai's Australian air conditioning range spans wall splits through to larger ducted reverse cycle inverter systems — the right choice depends on room count, capacity needs, and whether you're after single-zone or whole-home coverage.

Wall-Mounted Split Systems

PB, J, T and CJ-series inverter splits from 2.5kW to 8.0kW, plus floor console options, suited to single rooms and living areas.

Multi-Split Systems

Outdoor units (MON3H07B through MON6H18B) paired with multiple compatible indoor units for multi-room coverage from one outdoor condenser.

Ducted Reverse Cycle Inverter Systems

Ranging from 7.0kW residential-scale units up to larger 20–24kW systems suited to bigger homes or light-commercial applications.

Rinnai Home Controller

Smart control integration for compatible Rinnai air conditioning systems, extending the brand's connected-home offering.

Rinnai tends to suit Adelaide homeowners already familiar with the brand through gas hot water or heating, buyers wanting an established local Australian subsidiary rather than a purely import-distributed brand, and properties needing anything from a single-room split to larger ducted reverse cycle coverage. The recent extended 7-year warranty on eligible systems is also worth factoring into a like-for-like comparison against other brands.

Rinnai vs Other Brands — Which Is Better, and Why

Independent Australian HVAC commentary generally credits Rinnai with a strong local manufacturing and service heritage carried over from its gas heating and hot water business, now extending into a genuinely competitive reverse cycle range. Here's how it's commonly compared against two other brands we also install.

Braemar

Both Rinnai and Braemar built their Australian reputations on gas heating before expanding into reverse cycle air conditioning, and both now offer ducted reverse cycle systems alongside their traditional heating ranges — a useful side-by-side for Adelaide homes weighing up gas versus reverse cycle or hybrid heating options.

Mitsubishi Electric

Mitsubishi Electric has a longer, dedicated air conditioning heritage and broader premium ducted range, while Rinnai's recently extended 7-year warranty on eligible systems and established local service network make it a strong value comparison worth putting side by side for a whole-home ducted upgrade.

These are general, independently-sourced market positions, not a single definitive verdict — the right brand for your property depends on your budget, room layout, noise sensitivity, and whether you need a split system or ducted comfort. A Voltas property audit (below) gives you a specific recommendation rather than a generic one.

Rinnai Repairs, Servicing & Signs Your System Needs Attention

General HVAC maintenance knowledge applies to Rinnai systems just as it does to any brand — here's what we see most often, plus a few brand-specific notes.

  • Reduced airflow or cooling usually traced to a dirty filter or outdoor coil — the single most common and most preventable service call across every brand.
  • Zone damper or ducting faults on ducted systems common to any ducted reverse cycle installation regardless of brand, particularly as ducting ages in established Adelaide homes.
  • Error codes on inverter models as with any inverter system, board-level fault codes need brand-specific diagnostic knowledge; we cross-reference Rinnai's published fault codes during diagnosis.
  • Home Controller connectivity issues smart control features can occasionally need a network or firmware reset — usually a quick fix during a standard service visit.
  • Coastal corrosion on outdoor units applies to Rinnai as it does to any brand installed in coastal Adelaide suburbs — regular rinsing and coil inspection reduces long-term corrosion risk.

A routine Rinnai split system service typically takes 45–75 minutes per indoor unit, while ducted reverse cycle systems generally take longer depending on the number of zones. We recommend annual servicing for units in regular use, and twice-yearly for continuously run ducted systems, to protect both performance and warranty compliance.

Not Sure Rinnai Is Right for You? Book a Voltas Property Audit

Brand choice is only half the decision — sizing, placement, and ductwork design usually matter more to your actual comfort and running costs than the badge on the unit.

1. On-Site Assessment

We measure room sizes, window orientation, insulation, ceiling access, and existing electrical capacity — the real inputs that determine what capacity and system type will actually perform well.

2. Load & Capacity Calculation

Rather than guessing a kW figure, we calculate the cooling/heating load your specific rooms need, so you're not paying for an oversized system or stuck with an undersized one that runs constantly.

3. Brand & Model Shortlist

Based on your budget, noise tolerance, property type, and whether Rinnai or another brand genuinely suits the job better, we shortlist two or three realistic options — with honest trade-offs explained.

4. Fixed, Itemised Quote

You get a clear price for supply and installation before anything is booked in — no surprise costs, no pressure to commit on the spot.

Rinnai Warranty, Standards & What to Check Before You Buy

What Rinnai's own Australian warranty announcements state, so you can weigh it up before buying.

Warranty

Rinnai introduced a new 7-year warranty across a wide selection of its Australian air conditioning systems effective 1 April 2025, covering eligible split systems (PB, J, T, CJ1 and CJ series), multi-split systems, and ducted reverse cycle inverter systems (7.0–24.0kW); Rinnai Home Controller coverage began 1 August 2025. Portable air conditioners are explicitly excluded from this extended warranty. Rinnai's published material doesn't clearly break down parts versus labour versus compressor-specific coverage within that 7-year term, so we'd recommend confirming the precise coverage breakdown and any registration or maintenance conditions directly with Rinnai for your specific model before purchase.

Refrigerant

Rinnai's newer split and ducted reverse cycle systems use R32 refrigerant, while some of its larger ducted ranges have historically also been available in R410A configurations — check the specific model's data plate to confirm. Australia's HFC import phase-down, administered by DCCEEW under the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Act, progressively reduces the pool of bulk HFC gas permitted to be imported through to 2036; this affects bulk refrigerant gas used for servicing and top-ups of older R410A systems industry-wide, but does not restrict the sale or use of pre-charged R32 equipment such as Rinnai's current R32 range.

Australian Standards

Every installation must comply with AS/NZS 3000 (the Wiring Rules) and is completed by our A-Class electricians and licensed HVAC technicians. Energy performance is labelled under the Australian Government's GEMS Zoned Energy Rating scheme — check the specific model's current label for its star rating in your climate zone before buying.

More Rinnai Questions, Answered

How much does a Rinnai split system or ducted installation cost in Adelaide?

Cost depends on capacity, model tier, and installation complexity (wall type, ducting runs, electrical capacity). We provide a fixed, itemised quote after a short on-site or phone assessment before any work begins.

Is Rinnai's new 7-year warranty better than other brands?

A 7-year term is longer than many brands' standard 5-year warranties, though the precise parts/labour/compressor coverage breakdown isn't fully detailed in Rinnai's public announcement — we'd recommend confirming the full terms in writing for your specific model before comparing against other brands.

Does Rinnai make ducted reverse cycle air conditioning suitable for larger Adelaide homes?

Yes, Rinnai's ducted reverse cycle range extends up to 20–24kW, suited to larger homes or light-commercial applications, alongside smaller residential-scale ducted options.

Where can I get Rinnai parts and servicing in Adelaide?

As an independent multi-brand contractor, we source genuine Rinnai parts through the local distribution network where needed. Rinnai's long-established Australian manufacturing and distribution history generally supports solid local parts availability.

Can I get a warranty registered and honoured on a Rinnai system Voltas installs?

We install to manufacturer specifications and provide the documentation needed for you to register the warranty directly with Rinnai; because we're not an authorised Rinnai dealer, all warranty claims are handled between you and Rinnai using our installation records.

How does Rinnai compare to Braemar for an Adelaide home already on gas heating?

Both brands built their reputation on gas heating before expanding into reverse cycle air conditioning, so the comparison often comes down to specific model ranges, current warranty terms, and whether a hybrid gas/reverse cycle system suits your home better than a pure reverse cycle upgrade. We can walk you through the options during a free property audit.

"Jai was very prompt which was great because my air con failed in a heat wave. Luckily, he was able to attend same day and now 24 hrs later I have my new aircon installed and no more heat wave conditions to deal with! Thanks heaps, appreciate it."

Rebecca Williams

Google Review

"We had Jai come out to look at our 2 ducted aircon units that were tripping at the circuit board. Two different companies had told us different things — one said replace it, one blamed the electrics. Jai diagnosed and had both running and serviced within a few hours."

Google Review

"Jai came to look at our electrical switch board. The safety switch was tripping. He found the fault straight away and replaced the safety switches on the switchboard. Fantastic job and fixed the issue on the spot."

Peter Roberts

"Outstanding service from start to finish! The air con tech diagnosed and fixed a major issue quickly and efficiently. He explained everything clearly, worked meticulously, and made sure the system was running perfectly before leaving."

Josh Montagu

"Had the best experience with Jatinder from Voltas Electrical. Our air conditioner had stopped working and we had already got it checked by a few different people, but no one could find the actual issue. Diagnosed the fault in no time and fixed the problem quickly."
